The City’s Chief Planner position is an exciting and essential new senior leadership role that is critical to supporting this transformation and achieving the policy objectives articulated in OurWinnipeg – the City’s municipal development plan that outlines our vision for the next 25 years.

Under the general direction of the Director of Planning, Property and Development, the Chief Planner’s main objective will be to provide strategic and innovative leadership to the team responsible for the planning, implementation, evaluation and continuous improvement of the City of Winnipeg’s community planning, development planning, and plan implementation functions. This position will work closely with other City Departments to coordinate a cross-departmental approach to the delivery of integrated planning services.

This position will build, nurture and sustain a responsive and dynamic planning team that approaches growth and development management through an entrepreneurial lens and ‘open for development’ philosophy that will best position the City of Winnipeg to respond to anticipated growth and emerging economic development opportunities over the next 25 years.

The Chief Planner will be a transformative change leader, and provide direction, guidance and advice regarding the balanced OurWinnipeg policy objectives of economic, social and environmental sustainability. The ability to work collaboratively, build partnerships and achieve this balance is critical to providing effective planning services in support of Winnipeg’s stable and transforming areas, and supporting the vital role of our downtown.

The Chief Planner will ensure that the Division acts in compliance with all relevant legislation, policies and regulations, including the City of Winnipeg Charter, and be accountable for the financial management of the Division within appropriate departmental and corporate systems, frameworks, policies, procedures and standards.

In addition, as a member of the Department’s Senior Management Team, the Chief Planner will actively participate in strategic planning for the delivery of the Department’s full range of land based services, as well as acting for the Director as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION
Master’s Degree in City Planning
Eligible for membership in Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP)

EXPERIENCE
Ten years leadership and management experience in a planning or development environment
